I am glad to see someone with their priorities straight. What lens are you wanting for Christmas? And don't forget your birthday.

Wow really cool so I guess that makes a wide angle lens not so necessary.. I was thinking about getting this next. Tokina AT-X116PRDXN AT-X PRO DX 11-16mm Ultra-wide Angle Lens for Nikon

.. But maybe not if I can do all that with the 50mm

You can....... if the subject never moves.

Yes if something moves it won't work so a wide angle lens will be a good thing to have ! I dream of the 14-24 f/2.8 to go with a D610 one day !

Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR FX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
That one..

I may never be able to keep this straight -- I'm confused everybody. If Tammy is shooting with a D5100, wouldn't a DX-format lens be a better match? I ask because I may seek a prime lens someday, but probably a 35mm to replicate the as-I-see-it 50mm view I had with my film SLR. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.

Well , going by the reviews this lens is ideal for portraits .it has nice bokeh so that the focus stays on your subject. And it has a wide Aperture..you also can take really clear landscapes. A good all rounder. And it will be nice for my macro photography.. I have two Dx lenses My 50-300 and the 18-55 that came with it.

Well the 50mm f/1.8G on a DX camera will give you a FOV of about 75mm of the FX , so great for portraits and just a great all-round lens really! and if and when you upgrade to an FX you go out and get the 85mm f/1.8G or 85mm f/1.4D the latter being the cream machine !
