How do I undo 'color sketch' on existing pictures?

Hi,

I'm a newbie with my 5100. My son thought turning on color sketch looked cool. Now every picture on my very full memory card has been converted to color sketch.

Can anyone help me please? I have been over and over my users manual - no solution.

I would like to convert all of my photos back to the full color prints they once were.

Thanks for considering.

This is just for my own curiosity but how did all of the images get converted by just turning on color sketch? I know the d5100 has the effects mode but if I'm not mistaken that would have just made all of the future pictures be taken in color sketch mode. Wouldn't you have to go through and convert each to color sketch one by one in order to convert your previous pictures? On my d3200 if I convert one picture to black and white or color sketch it keeps a copy of the original.

Did you look at the complete content of your memory card outside the camera. Usually, the color sketch or other effects just create a copy of the selected picture. There should be an untouched copy left on your memory card somewhere. Let us know what you find in there.

Correct, and it's in the manual p286
"
Create a copy of a photograph that resembles a sketch made
with colored pencils. Press 1 or 3 to highlight Vividness or
Outlines and press 4 or 2 to change. Vividness can be
increased to make colors more saturated, or decreased for a
washed-out, monochromatic effect, while outlines can be made
thicker or thinner. Thicker outlines makes colors more
saturated. The results can be previewed in the edit display. Press J to copy the photograph, or press K to exit to playback without creating a copy."

I think on the d5100, you can apply sketch as an effect WHILE you shoot. If that was the case, you may be out of luck -no copy is made. I'm looking at p115 of the manual.

That's why I asked how all of the photos got converted... If the op shot in the effects mode then only the recent pictures that were taken would be in color sketch mode and I don't know how this would go unnoticed.

I wonder too. After the fact, you would need to do one at a time and it should leave the original for each. Turning on the effect for shooting, he would have had to not noticed it or maybe he thought he could reverse it later and just kept shooting.

Exactly!! I'm curious to see how this plays out.

Interesting....I've owned the D5100 and now the D7100, and while both have the effects and scenes modes, I've never used either.....but I'm thinking I might have to try the effects modes. I particularly want to try the minature effect (tilt shift) one.

I was hoping to find this out also. I did not realize color sketch had been turned on when I picked up my camera, and did not realize pictures were in this format while shooting. I usually check while taking the pix and did not realize this until I went in to edit photos after downloading them to the computer.

Moral of story: Shoot Raw AND jpeg and never loose another night of sleep over missed photo shoot.
