Hi all i just bought my first camera thats not a point and shoot. I got the D5100 with the kit lens on order and looking forward to using it. Was just wandering about some of the after market batteries sold on amazon or should I get a spare nikon battery. Any other suggestions would be great

You might receive conflicting responses to your battery question, but for my spare battery, I chose a factory Nikon product. I paid good money for my D5100 and didn't want to chance its performance or my enjoyment of it with a mystery battery. For me, buying an aftermarket battery was akin to buying a new car for $25,000 and buying a discount oil filter to save $3.

I also bough a spare Nikon... More money but I was comfortable haveing factory proper... I do know a couple other 3rd party have worked well but I do not regret the extra dollars for mine.

I typically buy Nikon batteries for my DSLRs. When I bought my D7100 it came with a third party battery (Watson) as a "package" from B&H. It's worked flawlessly and I have no complaints. IMO most third party batteries should work fine, but probably run a higher risk of an issue occurring.

Chinese batteries seem to die on charger if ever, so I'd go ahead and invest into some of those (that have the micro chip without which the camera will reject it, unless you flash a hack into the firmware).

I've been using 3 Chinese batteries for a year without an issue. One that died on me, died right away on charger, so it never compromised anything.
