Connect Camera to HD monitor

I want to shoot some videos with my Nikon D5100 and I would want to monitor that with my HD monitor instead of the live view. Is it possible to connect my camera to my monitor to use is as live view? I only have VGA port in my monitor. Will a VGA to mini HDMI cable be able to do this?

I've done it HDMI to HDMI with my D3100 but Live View on that is limited to 30 second chunks. Plus the HDMI on my Mac is output only. I can do it fine to a TV. For convenience I ended up buying a 7" external screen that slots in my shoe and connects via HDMI. On my brand new D7100 appears to have no time limit on Live View but I'm not sure about using it with video.

I know that the HDMI connection on some Nikons is limited to displaying already shot images and video and not for use while shooting. I'd check your manual, for sure.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys.. I just wanted to make sure before I invest in something.. The mini HDMI to vga is getting a bit too costly.. was wondering if the A/V to vga converter would work..

Last summer I connected my D5100 via HDMI to an HD tv to use at my niece's wedding as a photobooth. The D5100 was on a tripod, I had the camera plugged into AC power and I used a long manual shutter release cord for folks standing in front of a back drop to take photos of themselves as mementos for the couple. Worked really well except for one thing: the camera would shut off after a while of sitting idle in between people using the "booth". Suggestions on how to prevent the camera from shutting off? My other niece is getting married on the 23rd of this month (August 2014) and wants to do the same thing. (I know, a silly use for an exceptional piece of really good equipment, but a fun thing to do at a wedding!)

Thanks folks!
