I think it was my cheap 55-200. Just that the D5100 is so very sharp. I had lots of problems with it early on but I was fooled by the VR thinking I could shoot a spot or two slower and get by with it. More recently I went back to my roots and started shooting the focal length. 200mm no slower than 1/250sec my results have improved greatly. I just set it to shoot no lower than the self imposed limit.
I printed a 13 X 19 of this shot and was truly amazed that I could see the individual hairs on the belly of this beast.

Initially, I was a bit disappointed and thought the camera should do better sharper. However, similar to your experience, once I figured out what likes to work with what my pictures started to get sharper.

What i would like to figure out is if there is better quality glass available for our cameras that are still able to auto focus and light meter. My research has been clear as mud.

I have the AF-S DX Micro 40mm f / 2.8g and I can tell the difference on that lens. OR at least I could on the D3100 before it met it's untimely demise. I haven't shot it on the D5100 yet. I have been pretty happy with the two zooms I have.

I am stumped on how to post one that is already in my gallery, so instead of re-loading it here is the link -->Night time nightmare - Nikonites GalleryIt isn't all that fantastic of a shot but the ability of a low light capture of high speed action that the D5100 has totally blew my mind with this shot.

Well, I will disagree also...that is a really good shot. I like all your action shots...shows what experience can do, with good equipment. I'm nosey...what lens did you use?

I had a heck of a time figuring out how to link to an image in my gallery for a forum post. The dag-nabbed method really frustrated me, until I figured it out. Here is a poor explanation:

1. Use Quick Reply
2. Click on "My Photos" at lower left hand corner.
3. Enlarge that window to full size.
4. At the upper left-hand corner of the enlarged window, you will see "From" and then a pop-down menu window with "Attachments" in it. (Default)
5. Click the down arrow (triangle), and you will see the choice of "V-Gallery". Choose this by clicking on it. (This is what I didn't do!)
6. You will then see your entire gallery of images.
7. Click on the one you want to link to, and it auto-magically appears in the Quick Reply post.

I hope this works for you!
