Hi am new to this i just got this camera for my birthday and I can say its a bit advanced for me.

My problem is using the auto setting the camera makes three clicking sound to be able to take a single picture
am sure one is the shutter then theres to more clicks if i move the camera be for all clicks the picture will be a blurry or just get the feet or floor thats way to long and to many clicks just to be able to take a picture ,,,

so i would not be able to take 2 or 3 pictures fast my 89 dollar camera is way better..

Sounds like you are in live view. Use the actual viewfinder of the camera. Further, read your manual from front to back. Sorry dude, but there is no $89 camera that can beat a D5100. Don't blame your Nikon for your lack of knowledge. Again, read the manual.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the world of advanced photography.

A DSLR isn't meant to be able to pick up and take great pictures with, like a cameraphone or a point and shoot. It takes time to learn the various settings and terminology. Best thing you can do is to read the manual and pick up a companion book, such as Douglas Klostermann's effort on the D5100.

At the very least, familiarize yourself with the SCENE modes, you'll get pretty decent pictures even just starting out.

Do you know if you have "Release Mode" in "Continuous"...if so, you may be firing off three shots and not realize it. Just a wild guess, of course!

It took me a while to learn that the Camera Manual was my friend. I downloaded one to my computer, book marked it on my desktop, and now can access it and the help section at the click of a mouse, with the camera in my hand...very handy.

Very good advice folks...

Righto here are a few things to help get you started...Aperture Priority At F8...ISO 200...Auto Focus set to AF-C Auto Focus Constant....Your MANUAL will have how to change these in your camera menu...

Google and You Tube are great tools...

It is possible that there is something wrong with it. If you believe there is, you could take it back to where it was purchased, and go from there. The dealer would surely be able to help you resolve any problems with the camera.

I hope you resolve your problem, I understand how frustrating it is, not to be able to use a new camera.

Let us know what the problem is/was if you get it working.

When you get it going, and take some images, be sure to share with us!

Is it in quiet mode? Is there a quiet mode on the D5100? Can't remember but it rings a bell.

I still beleive he was in in LiveView. That is exaclty how the camera sounds when taking a photo in LiveView. What he says about getting pictures of the floor also makes me beleive he was in LiveView. Get out of LiveView, use the viewfinder.

DT, there is a "Quiet Shutter Release" mode option in "Release Mode" options in the shooting menu...perhaps you were thinking of this?

You may be correct. I *never* use liveview to shoot in, but did a shot just a minute ago, and it made 4 distinct clicking sounds when I took the image. And, I might add, I have not needed live view to accidently shoot my foot in the past...my fat finger works just fine for that...

Yep, so in liveview, there is a slight lag between the clicks. Therefore, when you take the picture, you here a click and then get excited and chimp - go look at the picture - and ooops, the camera is still taking the picture! There are still a few clicks to go. But, to late, you have taken a picture of the floor! lol:)

If all else fails, find the factory reset. That'll put all the settings back to the way when it came out of the box. Then put it in auto mode and take a picture. Should just go "click". If not, i might suspect something is wrong.

Unless it comes out of the box in live view. Not familiar with the 5100.

Actually I have the same problem, my 5100 takes 2 pictures in live view, and it`s not supposed to! I have done a full reset on the camera several times and upgraded it to the last version but still with no result. The problem lies in the camera software that needs a reboot, the problem is that the service costs more than the camera itself and there is no information or available software on the internet to do it myself. My advice, throw it in the garbage and buy a Canon!

"Takes two pictures" as in "saves two (different) pictures to the memory card" or as in "increase shutter count by two"? As far as I understand, getting into live view *is* a shutter activation. So when you take a picture in this mode it activates the shutter to snap your pic then activates it again to bring you back into live view for the next shot. I believe all reflex camera are like that (?).

It takes 2 distinct pictures, as the light gets darker the time in between the 2 shots gets longer, up to 30 sec in low light. In the end camera shows only 1 picture but it's the sum of the 2 pictures it took. If not on stand gets blury or totally wiped if you move it a lot in between. All the settings are right, I can say I've become an expert trying to fix this problem:)

Sounds like you have the Long Exposure Noise Reduction turned on. It is controlled in the Shooting Menu under Long Expr. NR.

Agreed. I suggest that as well. Go outside on a sunny day and start simple -- set the Mode Dial to Auto, be sure the lens switches are set for Auto Focus and VR On, then look through the viewfinder and take a picture of something perhaps 20 Feet distant. If you're still hearing three clicks Marcogerra and your pictures are blurry, something is likely wrong with the camera.
