continuous shooting mode in D40 camera

Yes there is...you have to turn it on using the menu. I don't remember off the top of my head how to activate it. So I can't explain further...I'll try to remember to post later, when I have the camera in front of me.

Click your MENU button. On the far left of the monitor screen you'll see a list of picture icons. Select the 3rd one from the top.....it should look like a "pencil". This will take you to the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. Select SHOOTING MODE. Then select CONTINUOUS.

Also a short cut to doing this is with the D40 to set the scene mode wheel to "Sport", as this will turn on the continuous shooting option too.
But I find I have to be careful with my D40 in CS mode, as the shutter button then becomes hair trigger light and I can fire off 3-4 shots sometimes when I only wanted one! -Thank God it's not film, right? ">})
