learning to focus with the D40

I am happy clicking photographs with my D40. I want to learn how to focus better and do not want to give eminence to the background. How to do this?

    Re: learning to focus

If you're wanting to bring focus more to a specific point, you'll have to experiment with higher aperture settings. For example, if you set the lens to a f/2.0 aperture the background will be more blurred then it would at f/8. The limit of aperture depends on the physical limitations of the lens you are using. You can play with this setting manually by setting the camera to aperture mode (the A setting on the dial).
