Lens choices and recommendations for 3300....

Hello there! Been awhile. I'm in the market for a new lens. I currently have the 35mm 1.8, and the 18-55 vrll. I'm leaning towards something with a little more zoom.

Tamron 70-300, non vr version -$200
Nikon 70-300, non vr -$200

Or, should I look at the VR versions of the above lenses for another $150 or so,

And then, the Nikon 18-140, which I found one on sale for ~$200...

I like getting up close and personal, usually if I can't reach it, I'll crop it.

What are yall's thoughts? Thanks

It you do go with the 70-300 do go with the VR. I have the Nikon 70-300 VR and it is a great lens.

BUT

You will be missing a bit of the zoom between 55 and 70. Does not sound like much but you will have to be changing lenses a lot between the 18-55 and the 70-300. When I was shooting with my D7100 (DX like your camera) I had the 18-140 and the quality of it was far superior to the 18-55 and the reach is perfect for a walk around lens. My wife shoots with a 18-200 and it is a pretty nice lens but personally I don't think it has the image quality of the 18-140.

I had for my D7100 the Tokina 11-16, Nikon 18-140 and the Nikon 70-300 VR. This covered just about anything I wanted to shoot with a minimum of lens changes.

The Nikon 18-300 mm lens is a terrific choice. So is the Nikon 18-140 mm lens, depending on your needs and wants. You can't go wrong either way.

By the way, how satisfied you are with wide tokina lens? May you please provide some samples with it?

I was extremely happy with the 11-16 on my D7100. So much so that I bought the Tokina 16-28 FX lens for my D750. It has become my favorite lens for the D750. Heading out of town right now but I will try to dig up a few from the 11-16 / D7100 this evening

I think the non VR 70-300 is a screw driver AF so will not AF on D3300. Recently I tried the Tamaron 70-300 Macro. That is also around $150 new. Between the Nikon and Tamaron 70-300 I liked the Tamaron as it had both AF and Macro, otherwise both have a lot of CA in high contrast edges.

Actually the 18-55 which comes with D3300 has the maximum magnification (0.3X) amongst the non-macro lenses. The Tamaron has 0.5 magnification
