shooting in Raw

Hi y'all, this is Mallrat. Like Rick, I went on line to find out more about shooting in Raw. I set up my D3200 as to favored settings. I was in Manual mode doing this. Well, when I went back to Auto mode , no beep, out of focus, etc. What I would like to know, can you set Raw in any shooting mode? I have since done a factory reset in Auto as well as Auto Guide. Camera is now in focus in these two modes.
I do want to get the best of manual mode.

As Sparky said, Raw is a image recording format. It preserves a lot more data from the original shot. Using it would not cause the problem you described. I would say you probably somehow ended up in manual focus mode. This can be done from a switch on the lens but I think you did it from the camera menu since it was cured with a reset. Manual Focus mode will let you take out of focus pictures and of course no beep. It is meant to focus using the ring on the lens and the camera will not attempt to focus on its own. I can not think of any other setting on your camera that would cause out of focus pictures. Your particular camera will not let the shutter fire unless it sees focus. So if your shots were totally out of focus and the shutter was able to fire, I'd would say you were in Manual Focus mode. Also do not confuse manual shooting mode ('M' on control dial) with Manual Focus Mode (set in menu, MF).

There are two "Manual" modes
. Lens Focus, which is selected by a switch on the lens
. Exposure, which is selected by the mode switch (one that has M, A, S P etc)

As mentioned RAW has nothing to do with modes, it is a storage format, just like jpeg or tiff.
