does anyone use a battery grip? does the good outweigh the bad? The Nikon is $209.00 but you can get them for as low as $30, is the Nikon worth it the price difference?

I do like My MB-D15 grip for the D7100, (I got it free when I got the D7100)

The camera feels right, and well balanced when holding the camera. The camera can get a little heavy if you carry it around neck for any length of time, especially if you have a heavy lens on as well.

Would I buy one at Nikon price, no, I would get a 3rd party grip.

I'm normally the first to save a few bucks by going third party but when it comes to battery grips I've learned my lesson and ponied up for the admittedly ridiculously over-priced Nikon versions. A lot of people seem do happy with knock-offs but they've never panned out for me.

If you''re strapped for cash I will tell you that of all the grips I've seen for the 3xxx series, and I've probably seen more than most people, I'd say the one put out by Dolica is one of the better ones. I think they sell for around $75 or so.

I use them and like the fact that there is more to hang on to, twice the battery power. I've had good luck with 3rd party grips but I've heard about people having focusing problems with high end cameras.

I don't think Nikon makes grips for the D3xxx and D5xxx series DSLRs. They didn't when I had one of each of those series anyway. But the third party grips are better than nothing, and worked pretty well for me at the time.

Now for my Nikon models that the Nikon co.make grips for I highly recommend the OEM grips, for their much better build quality! :)

But with the OEM grip I use the D4 batteries, that I don't believe you can with the fake third party grips. Also who wants to re-buy a grip? Then there is the concern of how sturdy the tripod mount will be set in just plastic if you use a tripod mount strap.
But lastly, is it is mute anyway, since the D3xxx series doesn't have an OEM grip made for them that I know of. The third party grips are still worth having if OEM grips are unavailable! :)

But this is just my opinion from my admittedly limited experience! I just had a third party grip try to come appart on me on my D90 one time, and that started my love for the OEM grips and my going only for OEM on models that has one available for them! :)

adds comfort... however for a D3XXX/5XXX series... you are stuck to aftermarket, and if you want to shoot in portrait mode.... There is a signal cable that you need to attach, so that the shutter release button will work on those series...
Other than that I feel it helps balance out smaller and larger cameras by adding a bit of gripping room to them. If you have large hands, you will understand what I mean.
I have and use a battery grip on all of my cameras.
