Shooting menu options are disabled - why

When I access the shooting menu, many options such as 'set picture control', 'white balance' ... are disabled.
When you 'OK' on one of these disabled options, a popup window states

"This option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state"

All the options will be available when you shoot in fully manual mode.
When you shoot Auto, P & S mode, you are giving the camera the liberty to make choices for some settings, which means you don't have that choice, so you can't select it.

Like Alan said, it's all there in your manual...

I suspect the camera is in Auto or P mode, as was stated. A, S & M should make those options available. Once again, your manual has all the answers.

I would suggest you read your manual some, All of this information is in it..
If you search the pdf version of the manual for "This option is not available", you get no result except something about mirror lock up. I moved the selector to "M" and got back some greyed out options, but not the one to change image resolution. Any ideas?

Certainly, Nikon should at least put "This option etc" in the list of error messages.

What format are you shooting your pics with? Might be that for example picture control is not available in RAW.

That's because it's not an error... That message is telling you the option you want is not available because you have camera in a mode that does not support it.

The advice to consult the manual is the best advice.

I can't really tell because I can't get into that option any more. There is a "L" symbol which I am sure means large
Sounds like you've selected RAW format (versus JPG). When you shoot in RAW you can't choose an image size because RAW images are always full resolution.

Based on your posts I would direct you to pages 44 and 45; in the "Image Quality and Size" section.
Thanks, you are quite right, HF, but how is a user to jump from "This option is not available ... " to pages 44, 45 unless he or she has a great deal of experience? I don't know whether the dons of Nikon read this forum - they might - but if they do, I would suggest a substantial write up on the "This option is not available ... " message.

I am growing to like the D3200 but life sure was a lot simpler in the days of the Nikon F.

I understand where you're coming from. My first "real" camera was a Pentax K1000... The jump to digital is a large one.

My advice to anyone new to shooting digital is to sit down and peruse the manual, cover to cover... FIRST; it will answer questions you didn't even know you had.

It seems to me many people treat instruction manuals like they do a fire extinguisher; reaching for it only after something has gone wrong.
