help with indoor basketball photos

I have been shooting my kids indoor basketball photos and can't seem to get good clarity with the shots. I shot several pictures courtside using the sports mode, 55-200mm lens, 1600 speed, dynamic and 11 point tracking focus....I tried both. Most of the shots are either completely blurry or only a few players are in focus. Any suggestions? Should I try other modes and my smaller lens ( 18-55mm)?

Instead of Sports Mode, try shooting in Shutter Priority at 1/500th to 1/1000th. Your ISO of 1600 seems a bit high to me......maybe try an 800 ISO. A monopod wouldn't be a bad idea either. Take your lens off VR when using a high shutter speed, it's just not necessary.
Just remember......indoor gym lighting is not the best to shoot in. I'd venture to say that using a flash is not an option, but it may be permissable to use a flash with a difuser on it.

honestly i would use macro mode, i've done it for volleyball games and the pictures were outstanding.
and i would consider an external flash as well.

I shoot some indoor bball games with a 55-200 lens & a tammy 70-300. I set my D3100 @ 1/320 sec., Iso @ 800 on up. white balance, I had to adjust.

That would be found on page 28 of your manual. If you lost your manual here is a link so you can download it. I would suggest you sit down and read it.
