Force the flash

I am new to this forum so please let me know if I am violating any rules by posting these questions.

How do I make the flash fire for each shot. The computer doesn't allow me to force the flash when I want to use the flash to light up near objects or when the light source is behind the subject.

Also, I bought this D3100 because so many people told me that my older lenses would work just fine
but so far I haven't been able to get them to fit.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Many of the older lenses will not auto focus on this camera. You will need the lenses that have the focus motor built into the lens. You will need to move up to the D7000 or higher body to get the older lenses to autofocus.

I assume you are talking about the built in flash? I think there is a section in your manual that will explain how to set it up for "Fill Flash" Download the manual and you can find the answer there.

The internal flash in camera Auto mode decides for itself when it needs to pop open and help, or not. That is just how Auto is, it is automated.

But in camera modes A, S, P, or M, the flash is not automatic (nor is Auto WB or Auto ISO or Picture Control profiles necessarily on, like in Auto mode are necessarily on). Then if we want to use flash, we just open the door, and it flashes each time. If w don't want the flash, we leave the door shut. But not in Auto mode.
