Issue with card/computer not reading photos properly......

First and foremost, I'm using a mac with this camera...
Let me explain what's happening. The camera shoots the image alright, and everything is fine and dandy until I try to put the photos on my computer. I use adobe bridge usually or iPhoto, and everything works out fine as far as being able to view the photos and stuff, but then it gets weird... there are strange gradients in the picture, horizontal and completely different colours from what it should be. It looks interesting and all, but it's really annoying when ALL my photos turn out this way :(
After I upload the pictures to my computer, or even when I go to review the photos on the camera this happens and it can't be reversed. I'm thinking that it could be either the lens connection or something in that area, or the card itself (I'm using an SD card, and my lens is an AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G)
I really wanted to get into digital as film is becoming very expensive, but this is so frustrating!!
I'm hoping you guys can help me out, I've tried reformatting my card and stuff and I still get the same weird horizontal segments of wrong colour... I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help!! If any of you have further questions, I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

The first thing that comes to mind is you have a bad card. Try another card. What about a higher grade of card, like the SDHC. Or, you may simply have bad contacts on the card.
The second thing that comes to mind is......how old is your camera? Is it still under warranty? Could you bring it to the store you bought it from and get them to check it out for you?
Lastly, the other thing that comes to mind is......you don't mention what camera you have! :) That would be helpful. :)
When you fill out your profile, it makes it a whole lot easier to help you with your problem if we know what equipment you're using. Saves a lot of time, too. :)
Let us know if you ever get this problem resolved, OK? :)

I'm guessing you have a 3100 since you're on that thread.
I think Jack gave you good advice.
Also, are you using a card reader or the USB cord?

I've heard of this happening before. It turned out to be the card. Get rid of the card and use a new one. Do as Jack says and spend the money and get a brand name.

Sounds like a bad card to me.

Off-topic but somewhat related question: What are you guys using to transfer your images to your HD? I imported using iTunes and Lightroom with my L110 but I don't really want to use a 3rd party application with the D3100. I want to import to a folder on my HD and then import from there to LR. Thoughts? Should I get a card reader?

Card readers are cheap. I have a portable one I use "in the field", and I have one that I installed into my desk top computer. Easiest and fastest way to transfer pictures.

DUH! lol I don't always read the thread heading, eh! :) Getting old has its drawbacks at times. ;)
LOL, Jack. You're only old if you think you are :)
I'm only 29 . . . been that for at least 25 years :cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

To answer the OP's question what do I use to download photos from my D3100? Simplest way there is, pop the SD card out of the camera, and insert it into one of the card reader slots in my PC. From there I just open the SD, and drag and drop the photos into a folder on my desktop created for that purpose.

Super Mod
Format with the camera after checking to make REALLY SURE that all went right with the transfer.
I use a card reader and will copy from the card to the location of my choice on the HD. After making sure all is OK, I'll format in the camera.
