Hello friends.
I've been using 18-55 mm kit lens.
I intend to add a lens to my kit.
Which is better ..
55-300 mm
Or
70-300 mm
And which brand ..?

If you're looking at Nikon lenses, the 70-300 4.5-5.6VR is the better of the two, as the price indicates. It's acknowledged as one of the bargains in the Nikon product line and can be found refurbed for around $375. I have no experience with comparable third party lenses. I've used it (or its predecessor) on a D100, D7000, D600 and D750 with decent results.

I have the Tamron 70-300 VC USM and love it on my D610. It is an FX lens. I have no problem recommending Tamron lenses - I have a few of them.

I also have the Nikkor AF-S 55-300 DX which is the long lens for my D5100. I'm also very satisfied with that one too.

Thank you guys .. Just wanted to add here, that I've been using a D 3100 body, so being a DX and not-so-high end .. Which lens would be good for it ..?

The main reason to stay with Nikon is future compatibility,Nikon have a history of making changes to new cameras that can stop other makes working 100%,just because your DX you should still buy the best lens you can,i have just sold my 55-300 it was a great lens,so i have no problem if you want me to pick one saying the 55-300.

Very true. That is why I'm waiting for a Nikon 150-600mm lens for $1089.00 with a USB dock.

I had the old version of the Nikon 70-300 and though I wasn't thrilled with it, it made me want the newer, sharper versions of this lens! :)

I have a D3100 that I've been paring with a Sigma 150-500 and am very pleased with the results. Not real sharp on the long end, but all in all a good lens and a good price point compared to Nikon long lenses.
