Is my camera defective or is it just a setting that I set wrong?? Image distorted....

Hi,

I purchased my camera (Nikon D3100) a while ago (close to a year ago), but did not get to use it much until today.

I decided to try out "Live View" mode today as I prefer using the LCD than the viewfinder for most shots, and the image is all distorted. The colors are also all wrong and the image is very dark. I have attached a picture of the issue. Is this a setting or is my camera defective?

Well something's not right... I'd suggest resetting the camera first of all. To do that press 'Menu', select the Shooting Menu and scroll through the options until 'Reset Shooting Options' is highlighted, press ok, highlight 'Yes' and press ok again.

Repeat those same steps in the 'Setup' menu.

To see if this helped at all try taking a shot outdoors, in good light, using the green AUTO setting.

Thanks for the suggestions,

I tried resetting the shooting settings and the general settings but the issue is still there. The problem is even worst when I go outside (the screen shows all the colors as neon). I also did not mention in my last post that the pictures come out VERY blurry when using that mode.

is that in video mode? looks like a weird rolling shutter issue.

very dark is not a defect. I think its just exposure. bump up the iso to see if it changes

Yeeeeeeahhh... I'd start investigating repair options because this isn't looking at all good. I hate to say I suspect it's the sensor, but... I suspect it's the sensor.

I really hope I'm wrong.

Unless it's the sensor...

FWIW, did you shoot any pics NOT in live view? How did they turn out?

Look at the settings on the screen vs. the direct sunlight you are pointing it at. You need to find someone that knows about DSLR settings. There is just no way the LCD readings are accurate vs the target.
