Help appreciated please...

recently acquired a d3100 for what i think was a silly price given its age etc etc, came as new with the 18-55mm kit lense.

I want to get a bigger lense for it and have been looking at the 55-300mm but some say it wont autofocus?
Is this true??

The lense is : [h=1]NIKON AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300MM F4.5-5.6 G ED VR[/h]

Thanks in advance for help and advice.

That lens will autofocus on your D3100.

The D3100 does not have its own focus motor so it requires a lens that has the focus motor built into it. That "AF-S" designation stands for "Auto Focus Silent Wave Motor" and indicates the lens has the auto-focus motor.

Thank you Horoscope fish for your quick and helpful reply. I did think that AF did work but then i would find a comment saying it didnt so confused me a bit. I must admit Nikon is new to me (can you tell!!!) I was originally looking at another make (wont say) but seemed daft to pass up the offer on a d3100 even though basic as such, as budget allows i aim to 'upgrade' when possible.

Thanks again

D3100 is a great starting point.I take pictures of planets and other galaxies with mine .no joke.I have bought three of them for friends and family and a d5000..and all can share parts...I'm a very happy Nikon owner

The AF lenses have to have the focus motor built into the camera. In the DX Nikon camera that is the D7000 and the D7100 right now. The D3#00 and D5#00 cameras must use the AF-S lenses if they want autofocus.
