This post screams, "I should really read a book or take a course on the basics of photography!!" I do not mean that as a slam, dig or for it to carry any negativity. You've just got yourself a nice DSLR camera, likely after enjoying taking photos with a Point and Shoot, and now you have no idea how to use it, or at least some of the functions. There are many great tutorials on YouTube that you can watch to get yourself started, just search "DSLR Basics". Then look for a photography club in your area that welcomes beginners and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I know you've asked them here, but there is so much behind each and everyone that requires a fundamental understanding of things like, "What is ISO, how do I set it and what does it do?", that to answer questions without it would look like...

1. Use the meter and the front and back wheels
2. Camera does it
3. Camera does it

...and to answer it completely requires the writing of a book, or at least a chapter.

So, welcome to the wonderful world of photography, and Nikonites. We'll help you all we can, but you have a bit of self-studying to do before we can really help you.

Super Mod
You start by reading the owner's manual. There is a specific chapter about different modes, how they work, how to do adjustments.

the way i learnt was by reading a lot on here, looking at peoples pictures and trying out the settings they used, after about a month i started to get the hang of it, i snapped alot of important items/reading material and saved it on my phone, that way i could access it easy when i was trying shots out on the field.

LOL - I feel for you man.
When I first got my camera I thought I had stepped into Apollo 11 and told I was in charge and headed to the moon with no training! Fat lot of good a manual does in that sort of situation!!
Anyway the point is the manual is a very useful (probably the most useful) tool you have but it doesn't make sense at this point!
It will start making sense soon - as soon as you start shooting and seeing mistakes and trying to understand why they are mistakes.
These days my manual is liked reading a simple book - because I now know a bit about all (most of) the different things.
In the meanwhile Whiskeyman's link is a great place to start with camera in hand and one hand on the mouse to pause the video.
