Interesting delema with my kit lens

Today I decided to give some attention to using my 18-55mm kit lens, since I've spent so much time using my 105mm. But when I put the kit lens on my D3100 and turned it on I got an error message telling me to turn the camera off then on again. So I did so, with no change. I tried removing the lens and reinstalling it too, and even looked to see if there was any visible damage or dirty connections. Well needless to say I didn't see anything, and so the only lens that normally will auto focus on my Nikon no longer works.

I'm not really that upset about it, since it was never my favorite lens. But I am curious if any of you ran into this issue before, and if so what you did to fix it. So do any of you have a clue what to do to fix this? I'm completely broke for the foreseeable future, and I do like the idea of having at least one lens that will auto focus! Lol :)

My concern would be in determining whether it's the lens or the camera... Since you don't have another AF lens... It may be the body... and you won't discover that problem until you try another AF lens, and it too doesn't work...

I'll try that on the lens, but I don't have a blower yet, so I don't want to risk it on the body.
You could try a cotton swab or even a piece of paper towel very slightly moistened with alcohol. No drips, just barely moist. If there is a little grease film on the contacts it will help remove it and the moisture will also minimize any dust particles from the cotton.

Tried this idea just a few minutes ago, and it didn't seem to make any difference. But thank you for trying to help! :D

I'm hoping it isn't. I do have the 70-300mm lens and it works fine, but it isn't made to auto focus on the D3100. So unfortunately your concern could still be possible.I guess eventually I may figure that out if I buy another AF-S lens sometime.

Thanks Mike! :) But I'm afraid it didn't work. At least it hasn't effected the use of my other lenses! Lol :D
