flash and shutter speed

hi everyone! this is my first time on this forum.

I have a question about my nikon D3100: can anyone explain me why the shutter speed won't do over 1/200 if the flash is on? I am shooting in manual mode with autofocus on.

My guess is that 1/200 is the maximum speed that the shutter will "sync" with the flash. My 5100 has the same limitation of 200.
