Can I attach an old nikon 200mm macro lens?

I just got the 3100 to use with the old 200mm macro lens that I inherited. I don't know how old it is, but I'm guessing 80s or earlier. Google searches said it would attach to my new camera, but I've tried, and it doesn't seem to line up. Am I out of luck, or is there something I can buy to connect them? Thanks!

If it's an F-mount Nikkor lens, then yes, you can attach it to your D3100 and use it. Exactly which lens is it you're talking about? Also, you do understand that even if you do get it to mount you'll not be able to use auto-focus and must manually focus it, right?

I did read that I'd only be able to use it in m mode. It is a f mount lens. I tried attaching it, and it just doesn't line up. I was scared to try to force it, and it doesn't look like it would attach. It was given to me with a camera that looks older than the lens, a nikon FM. It worked with that. The lens says Cocinlight 52mm SKYLIGHT 1A France

You sure you're not looking at a filter?

The "Cocinlight" is the filter, not the lens. On the side of the lens there should be some numbers. It is a Nikkor or Nikon lens, yes?

If it fit on a Nikon FM camera then it will fit on your D3100. And you're right to worry about messing things up, especially if you don't know what you're doing. I would suggest you take it to your nearest camera dealer/shop and have them show you how to mount it.

Could you give us the serial number also please...looks like you might have a neat one. Maybe even take a photo of it and post it. I do not believe that any of the Nikkor 200's were "macro" I could be wrong though. Will investigate.

Sorry, I'm new to this. The part that I got that from doesnt seem removable. The rest has numbers, not a name brand. Around the top of the lens around the rim, through the glass, it says Auto Promaster Sp Mc zoom

I wouldn't mess around with that thing...

The FM camera though is something else. Take a picture of it put that snap on your desktop. Then come back here and in the box where you post you'll see a little tree in a box third icon from the right...click that...upload the picture from your desktop...post.

The lens is definitely not a Nikkor 200mm of any stripe. Aftermarket F mount likely. If so then before I used it I would look it over very closely. Look for fungus mainly. I would wager it has some dust.

Looks like a F mount to me maybe even non Ai. Those rabbit ears might be hitting your on board flash but I'm pretty sure it will mount and work. Check the glass out real good. If it is nasty throw the lens in the junk pile. What does the FM look like?

*no it's Ai*
