D200 with Vivitar 283 risky or not?

Hi guys.

I am as of today, the proud owner of a D200. :) I have an old Vivitar 283 from my film camera days and would like to use it on the camera. I've tried doing a bit of research and have come up with the following.

Th flash was made in Japan. The voltage across the terminals is 106 to 110v.
In the Nikon handbook it states the D200 can be used with trigger voltages less than 250v

My question is this.....have I measured the voltage correctly between + centre terminal and - side terminal. Is that actually the trigger voltage or does it increase as the flash is fired. Is it likely to 'spike'?

I realise no one will guarantee 100 per cent but I'd just like some opinions please.

Many thanks, Howard

From what I understand, the newer Nikons can't handle a high trigger voltage (>12V from the link that carguy posted). If your manual says the D200 is good up to 250V, it probably does, but check the line for the Vivitar 283 from that link: up to 600V for some older models. That would give me pause. If the 283 has a sync terminal, you should be able to use it off camera without any issues though.
