HELP!! Monitor setup on macbook pro.

Ok, so I just bought a Dell ultrasharp u2413 monitor to use with my macbook pro as an external monitor for photo editing. I also have a Canon pixma pro-100 printer that I use to print images. The issue I'm having is getting the picture on the Dell monitor to come out the same as the one that I print. Where do I begin?

After you've read the link above about prints looking like what's on your monitor, you get a grasp for all the different moving parts the need to come together.

having said that, the easiest way to achieve acceptable results, that I've found, is using Lightroom to do the printing... I spent a lot of time trying to get from a Mac screen to an Epson printer with little to no acceptable results. I get the best results by letting LR talk directly to the printer via its Print module

Did you calibrate your new monitor?

Thanks guys! No, I haven't calibrated the monitor yet and I plan on it. I'll read over the link in more detail tomorrow when I have time to experiment with it. How do you get lightroom to handle the printing? I tried to print straight from lightroom without using the Canon Print Studio extension but I couldn't figure out how to change paper settings etc.

EDIT* scratch that, figured out how to select paper size but how to you select paper type?

In the lower left is 2 print dialogues. Used to select your printer features

I don't see any options to choose paper type when I click either of those. I'm going back and forth between luster paper and matte paper so I don't want to just use a general setting.

I'm baaaack!!!!

In the lower left, click the "Print Settings"... in the middle of the fly-out, I get a drop-down box... that includes a bunch of settings... one is "Print Settings"... which includes a fly-out for "Media Types... that includes the various types of paper... Save the dialogue Badda Bing!!

For some reason this is all I get when I click Print Setting. The drop down box doesn't give me any options.

I was afraid of that... you're Canon driver is the issue I think...

Just to back up and double check a couple of things.... You are using the current, most recent version of Mac's OS ????

Check Canon's support site for that model Canon and make sure you've downloaded and installed the most recent Canon MAC drivers for that printer...

Drivers are updated and newest version of Mac OSX and still the same thing.

Okay... let's go in a different direction...

click the Printer button on the far right bottom corner and look at that dialogue... is it the same as the "print Settings" on the left side...???

You can also select the Print module, and scroll all the way to the bottom on the right side... and you'll see a section titled "Print Job" where you can select "Print resolution", "Print Sharpening", and just below that "Media Type:" with a small drop-down box... :D

There you go... click the things next to Matte and select what you want.

Check to see if there are different Profiles where you see Canon Pro-100<LU>... there may be a profile for a different paper type..

When I click where it says media type it just says matte or glossy. Is there supposed to be only 2?

There are other profiles in the color management section but doesn't that mean the printer is managing the colors instead of lightroom? As of now if I print and allow the printer to manage the print through the Canon Print Studio Pro extension that's been added to lightroom the color comes out completely different that what's in lightroom..
