Aperture 3 comments

Okay .. let's kick this mutha off. I am a MAC guy and use Aperture 3 for storage, cropping, and minor adjustments. From Aperture 3, I have to export to Photoshop Elements for resizing, airbrush, background/layering change, etc. PhotoShop for MAC doesn't recognize NEF (Nikon RAW) so all files exported are either TIFF or JPEG.

I have just upgraded my Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 and am not happy even though there are over 200 upgrades with this release. Comments?

Thanks ophiuchus, What are you using for storage and editing? From my PC friends I hear that they use Lightroom, or PhotoShop - not sure if the PC editions provide library capabilities though.

Dave, Mac guy here also but I use Lightroom because of it's library features and some editing capabilities (white balance works great in LR compared to PS). I do the same as you for major tweaks, I export out of LR into PS for all lens distortion corrections and major retouching. I have tried Aperture, along with Bibble Pro 5, DxO Optics and Capture, but I find LR provides the best of all worlds when coupled with PS.

I've heard of a program called Paintshop PhotoPro X3. Apparently it will give PhotoShop a run for the money. Any comments on this?

Aperture 3 has introduced over 200 fixes and enhancements to the photographer. Apple has come a long way since the original release of 1.5 but still not able to offer many of the features available/provided by PhotoShop.

I'm not familiar with Paintshop, but there are several software packages all promising to give PhotoShop competition. My opinion, Adobe will reign for many years to come.

I know the original post is quite old now, but I'm pretty sure that Photoshop Elements on the Mac can work with NEF/RAW images. I had an older copy of Elements and I don't remember that as a limitation. I did a quick search of the Adobe site and it shows Camera Raw updates for the Mac version of Elements since 2005.

The ability to export NEF/RAW files from Aperture is very easy. I sometimes like to use DxO and Photoshop for image enhancements and DxO needs the original RAW file to do its magic. What I do in these cases is to export the master image to a temporary directory where it can be picked up by DxO. The DxO processed image is then imported back into Aperture where I can do additional enhancements if warranted. When using Photoshop, the integration between it and Aperture is fine for my needs. I'm fine with using the TIFF files that Aperture sends to Photoshop, and like how the processed image from Photoshop is entered into the Aperture library as a duplicate but separate image.

I've used both Lightroom (1 & 2) and Aperture (1.5 to 3.1) and find both tools integration to other image editors meet my needs. Certainly there is better integration between Lightroom and Photoshop, and DxO than what is available in Aperture today. But when it comes to working with a large number of images quickly, Aperture seems to work better for me.
