Both the X-Rite ColorMunki and the Spyder 5 Express have less than stellar reviews on both B&H and Amazon. So does either of these really work well, or do we need to look elewhere?

I have the Spyder4Pro, The only difference according to DataColor from the Express and Pro is the lack of a ambiant sensor.
I am getting good results as far as I can tell.

The reason I got the Spyder over the Smile was that it is supossed to work with 3rd party calabration software(argyss/DispCal).
So you can use those if you don't like the DataColor software.

But either one should work, But I am very happy with the Spyder and will by it again if I need a replacement or an upgrade.

Edit: Check the DataColor website for the differences between Express and Pro.
The bit I mentioned was about the hardware, But I only went for Pro as it allowed multiple monitors to be calibrated(which I have subsequently found out that consumer grade graphics cards do not have multiple LUTs for this)
