4 Bay NAS

Well my 4 Bay NAS arrived today and I have just set it up.

Wasn't too hard although I could not find it by connecting it to the modem so had to connect direct to my iMac and share its ethernet port as internet.

But all in all it was very straight forward and I now have 3TB on a Gigabit connection where all my photos will be stored, later I will get more HDD's and then have a full 4 x 3TB HDD's running. This will allow for easy backups etc.

I am now transferring my data from my mac's folders, 600GB is going to take around 3hrs.

Now with this extra storage I am going to 'try' and sort out my filing system and LR... Does anyone have a suggestion on which is the best way to do this when using a NAS system? I am currently transferring all my photos and most Data to the 3TB HDD on the NAS, and I will be adding drives as I get them.

I don't have any suggestions for you mate, but I wouldn't be a smart ass if I didn't say, "better you than me":p

Not to use LR, honestly. I file via "YYYY-MM-DD [event/shoot/name]" folders. Jpeg folder ends up as a sub for each. And these days I rename the keeper labelled shots as well to make it easier when I upload/have to search on my wordpress or even in the comp.

Ok I have started again, I am moving all my folders via LR so that LR will know where everything is.

I am going to try and use collections more effectively and name my shoots/shots so that everything is organised.

LR already creates folders for me for Year/Date all I have to do is label or create collections where I can easily locate photos when I want.
I will also be stream lining my website over the coming days/weeks to see if I can make it easier to navigate.

Wish me luck :)

Best of luck Scott... I am looking to do something similar... toying with tags for all and then collections for favorites... tag will pull up industrial and collection will feature my Favs in industrial.. over simplified but that is the direction I am thinking of doing...

Yes I am thinking similar. I am also going to just use LR to import my photos from my camera so that it organises them neatly and so I can possibly find them easily.

I am also going to start going through ALL my photos and deleting the crap ones, something I should have been doing all along but haven't.

I have a 2 bay NAS, with a pair of 3TB drives in. My RAW files take up the most space but there is music etc on there too and important stuff like my CV, Insurance etc.

I set the NAS so each drive is a single volume, then my RAW files back up from one to the other every night. Every couple of weeks it backs up to an external USB drive which I keep at work. The USB part is a bit flaky as I do it manually, so I may bite the bullet and sync it all up with Google drive, which is US$9.90 (I think) a month for 1 TB, or get a second USB drive and rotate them.

As far as filing my RAW files, I have a folder for the year, then each day's photos are in their own folder under that (YYYY/MM/DD) then I just make sure that the metadata in the RAW files is done during import for searching. I also like using the smart collections in LR, so I can find shots of dogs or family etc easily. It may not be the perfect method, but 4 years / 16000 shots later it seems to serving me ok.

Yep, I need to do this... I use the 5 star rating in LR for that. I'm in the process of reviewing what I've given each shot then all the "1"'s will go, and then I'll start looking at the "2"'s. "3" and above I'll keep. If I do sync my shots up to Google storage, there no point paying to keep crud! lol

That is kind of similar to what I am planning, my NAS comes with Automatic back up so I can plan it in but need extra HDD's to add into the system. After all these are moved I am going to try and use one of my 3TB external SDD's as a backup until more NAS HDD's arrive.

Yes exactly. With my Flickr account I get unlimited storage but not sure if it will store RAW files. My dropbox is quite large though so may be using that more, it also sync automatically.

They sound like similar NAS's - The internal backups are scheduled & automatic (RAW = Daily, everything else that rarely changes is weekly) It's the USB part that I don't like, I have press a button on the front, which clearly I keep forgetting! lol

One thing I am noticing is that I am getting doubles of some things even quadruples. I hope this sorts itself out after a bit. Will need to relocate the catalogue etc after all files have been moved.

...and here I am, thinking "4 Bay NAS" means a 4 car garage full of acquired bodies, lenses and other photography necessities. ;)
