Well crap, or not. I have Lightroom 5 arriving today, 3-4-15.

How does Lightroom upgrade system work?

Should I send back LR5 and purchase LR6 instead?

Will LR5 updates include whatever is in the latest LR, 6, 7, 8.......?

In short, no. Release versions up-DATE but a whole new version means an up-GRADE, and those are two different things.

LR 5.0 will update to, say, LR v5.1 or v5.5 but it will never be LR 6.0 because going from LR v5.0 or v5.1 to v6.0 is an upgrade and that you have pay for by buying the new version. That's how software companies make money, new releases with new, better stuff.

Or you can get a Creative Cloud subscription and always be current.

How does Lightroom upgrade system work? my understanding is that LR upgrades camera models as they are released until there are major upgrades

Should I send back LR5 and purchase LR6 instead? yes, I would or pay $10/mo. and get Creative Cloud that includes BOTH LR and Photoshop

no....don't think so

It could be there's an "upgrade" version that costs less than the full package. It used to be like that in the past. If not, you have to buy the new version.

So the options are:

1) Keep the LR5 on DVD for $104 and accept 'what it is' for the duration

2) Exchange for LR6 for possible price of $180 and accept 'what it is' for the duration

3) Go to the cc to get both at $10 per month and live 8 more years for a minimum $960 w/eternal upgrades

Once the masses are signed to the cloud, what will subscription costs be? Pretty much at the will of Adobe?

Option 4: boot LR and use another like RawTherapee, Darktable or ...something with light...

There are more editors and you can use LR5, upgrade it to 5.7.1 and do with that what you need and get used to another editor that does just as well, if not better and costs nothing.

Adobe has pretty much stated that the $10/mo (which also includes their bridge software and PS as well) will remain fixed for quite some time. It's not a guarantee, but you sign a 1 year contract up front, then after that... if it changes, you can cancel. I use it, and considering the cost of PS, plus the Upgrades when they come out, I'm coming out ahead for quite some time.

It is like it is. If you want to use LR, the cheapest option is to ppm or annually and always have the latest versions.

If you want standalone; only LR is still an option for that but every year or one and a half year they'll release a new version you'll not be able to use. You can keep using the older version until there's something which forces you to get a new one.

That's how the game works.

Effectively, yes.

Other options include software applications like ACDsee Photo Editor, Corel Paintshop Pro or one of the free alternative editing tools like GIMP or RAW Therapee.

Happy hunting.

If you need LR now, buy the current verison and pay for the upgrade when 6 comes out. I originally bought V4 and am up to 5.7 now I believe.

I don't lease my camera gear and have no plans of leasing the software to edit my images. Adobe can keep their CC offering personally.
