Hi All,

I've just upgraded my pc, installed nx2 and updates. First couple of times i ran it, it was ok. Went to open it again and it froze on the welcome screen and had to restart pc in safe mode.

Identified that it was nx2, and a small tab came up saying, printer error. So i tried reinstall, but nothing changed.

I also disabled printer spooler in windows, but nothing. Please please help, i'm at a loss now as to what to do.

Thanks guy's :)

If it were me, I'd uninstall and try a totally new install. It might be something causing it other than the printer driver. I say this because I've never had a printer driver crash my computer.

If it is loading at start up, you can disable it. Go to Start. Type in msconfig into the box and hit enter. Look at the Startup tab to identify which programs are loading at start up. If it is one of them, disable it. You will still have access to the program when you need it, but it doesn't need to load at start up.

Just to help the experts (not me), when you say you "upgraded" your computer, what exactly did you do to "upgrade" it? Perhaps that info will help...

I hope you have already fixed your problem, if not...

If I understand correctly, you wrote that you have un-installed View Nx2, and re-installed it.

If that is true, perhaps when you un-installed View Nx2, there were some files left behind that the un-install program did not delete.

I have noticed that used to be a problem for me once in a while. To search for those "orphans" is exasperating.

I now use the program "Revo Uninstaller" to delete any softwear, and have used it for several years without problems. It just works.

If you choose the "Advanced" removal option in Revo, it uses the built-in software program's un-install (View Nx2's un-install), notify you of that, and then will further search for what the manufacturer did not want deleted. You can then choose what files that were not deleted, to be deleted. There are other interesting options, also.

Perhaps if you would download a free trial of Revo Uninstaller, Uninstall your current View Nx2, and then re-install it, it may solve your problems.

Here is the link to Revo Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily, Forced Uninstall, Leftovers Uninstaller, Portable Uninstaller

Link to latest Nikon View Nx2 that will not need to be updated...

If I have totally mis-read your posts, and this advice is so off the wall that it gives you laughing fits, then it was good for a laugh, perhaps. LOL

(Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...)

Lot of software do not clean the registry fully. That creates a problem in a reinstall. Try cxleaning the registry.
. Use windows to uninstall all the Nikon Software.
. In command prompt type "REGEDIT"
. Search for "NIKON" and delete each entry found.
. Go to beginning of file and Search/Delete again.
. Exit regedit, and run it again, and search/delete the Nikon entries.
. Reboot the computer and search for Nikon in registry, in case some entries are left, or some software is creating the entry again.

Now do a clean install. If the problem persists, then some drivers in your "Upgrade" are conflicting, and you can do little about it, excepting asking Nikon to solve it.

One thing I have found is that and old MB, with new OS and latest Software are not always compatible. I have a 8+ year dual Xeon MB. Every thing worked fine with XP. Once I loaded Windows problems started with mysterious crashes. I traced it to driver incompatibility between the OS and older hardware. SO I deleted those drivers which were not really essential and the problems stopped.

By the way, I use "Cute PDF" driver to print to "PDF", which works perfectly with all OS versions.

I'll be blunt; ViewNX-2 is crapware. Seriously.

Get Capture NX-D instead. It's available at Nikon, for free, and does a better job. It also allows you to do more with your shots. It too has some issues but this far I didn't shout at it as much or as loud as I did at View.

I forgot to mention the program is Capture nx2. Did'nt know there was a View nx2 now.

You're really unlucky then. Considering the fact you have upgraded your computer, I assume you meet the minimum requirements to run it. All you can do is remove all, clean up your registry as suggested (cccleaner does a good job) and try a fresh install.

I don't understand why there is a "printer" problem since installing NX-D should have nothing to do with that.

Btw, you sure it isn't Capture NX-D instead of NX-2? NX2 is an old version which is no longer supported as far as I know. I first assumed you made a typo but you could be installing the old version.

Sorry for not getting back. There is still an update on the nikon site for Capture nx2 to run on win 7. I installed this and the program runs fine, except when its crashing my pc, and then saying printer error.

I've decided to abandon it and try nx-d, but it won't have the functions i want. It was nice to be able to get most of my editing done with Capture nx-2,and then go into photoshop for the more advanced stuff. Never mind.

Nikon have definately made a mistake discontinuing Capture nx-2.

Thanks for the help guy's.

I only use NX-D and nothing else, so I am curious to know
a) What functions you use are missing in NX-D
b) What further processing do you do in Photoshop

Well aroy, correct me if i'm wrong,

In NX-D, can i use control points to select certain area's within an image to adjust contrast, saturation etc,or alternatively for a similar function use the selection brush to choose where i would like to apply blur or selective sharpening. The gradient tool and healing brush is also handy.

Capture NX-2 pretty much has most of the functionality of a basic Photoshop program, with the exception of being able to use layers. And it's really simple to use.

If i need to use photoshop,it will be so i can utilize layers for blending exposures for landscapes mainly. Sometimes other stuff aswell.

Give RawTherapee a try. It's awkward in the beginning, not very well documented but an excellent editor nonetheless. It has control points although they could be different from what you are used to. It can occasionally crash, at least on my Mac.

It's free too.

I do not think that you can adjust the image selectively in NX-D, that is select a region and change it only there. I have never felt the need for it, hence did not try it.

What I do instead is to use the exposure controls (with custom graph some times) to change the image. I can extract deep shadows and recover a lot of blown highlights this way.
