Capture NX-D Focus Point Question

Last night I was checking out some shots I had taken earlier and seeing which ones I wanted to PP. They were shots using the 70-300mm lense and I had a few of weeds with water droplets shining in the sun. I couldn't seem to figure where I wanted to crop them for the best focus on the drops. I then had an idea to turn on the focus point indicator. Nothing showed up. I then tried it with some different shots taken during the same time frame. Some had the focus point show up and some didn't. I think I may possibly know why, but I am opening this up to see if someone knows for sure. One of my theories, yet to be tested, is that I set the focus for the shot (Locked) and then moved the camera off to get a little different perspective. This was done intentionally as I was testing DOF and composition. I am thinking that the shots that I focused/locked, but never moved the camera left or right are the ones with the focus point registering in Capture NX-D.

Thoughts??

I have not really checked it, but your reasoning seems correct. When I shoot in Manual focus, not focus points shows, so I assume you will get it only if the focus was confirmed.

Hi
Ive had the same issue with a 35mm doing some test shots
Some showed the red focus square some didn't
I started a thread to find the prob it was Focus Point in the d7100 section
Got several replies check em out
I use back button focusing , a couple of members said that focus priority is disabled with back button focusing
So on the odd occasion the shutter will fire even if lens loses focus
I haven't check it all out again yet but hope this helps a bit I'm no expert so will be interested to read your replies from members

Nothing has changed from NX2 to NX-D with respect to the Focus Point indication.

With AF-S set, if you lock focus and re-compose then the indicator in NX2/NX-D will show. But it will merely show the Focus Point used. It will not indicate the object on which you focused.

The AF ON Button will give the same result.

Just tried aiming a a featureless sky camera couldn't focus and shutter will not fire , this is with back button focus
So I assume focus priority is NOT disabled with back button focusing as was suggested in another thread
so I too still don't know why some focus points show and some don't

I checked my photos of the last two months and while evidently the manual focus never show a focus point, between those on auto I do have the occasional shot that also shows no focus point. I can't explain why.

It's in ViewNX2 for me but it's probably identical in Capture.

Thumb on back button acts like finger on shutter button half way. Thumb off allows shutter to fire regardless of focus.

Theoretically, no red square means no focus lock which does not mean no focus. Simply means the lens did not record a locked focus at the moment of capture.

I use single point focus most of the time and best I can tell always have a red square with focus lock using shutter button focus. Not sure if the red square shows using back button focus and release, then fire.

Eyelight, Ding, Ding, Ding, I think you may have pinpointed it. What you are describing with the back button focus is probably it. I have been using Back button focus set on the D5300. That is what I have been using. On occasion, I have found myself releasing before recomposing and sometimes I hold it. You have probably nailed it. I will have to do some testing. The Back button focus, as I understand it, locks the focus when pressed and holds that focus until it is pressed again.
