What are the better performing "routers" around?

My Belkin N750 dual band router is either getting old or just plain sucks. My son has an older ASUS RT-N56U which was bought back in 2012 performs much better (I think). Anyone here have used routers that are worthy of being recommended? ASUS apparently has one of the best routers for 2014. What say you?

I find that Draytek routers are some of the best, but I usually only install them for businesses as they can be quiet expensive. For home users I usually install the Netgear N600. I get the best speeds from the Draytek 2830n.

Issues can often be caused by wireless interference, microfilters, contention issues, internal wiring - the list goes on.

Belkin's are trash across the board; I use a Netgear N600 and have a clear wireless signal out in the front yard.

I am not familiar with Draytek and it is not apparently listed amongst the top routers reviewed by CNET. Anyone agrees with what they reviewed?

Netgear Nighthawk...

N routers are soooo last decade...

802.11ac routers, meanwhile, are on their way to delivering twice the throughput of 802.11n equipment.

Fred has the best suggestion, the Nighthawk. I looked at those a while back, but $200 was a bit steep for me. The way everything is going wireless in my house, I probably should have gone with that.

I've been using the Netgear N600 for a few years now without any problems. I'm sure there are better and newer routers out there, but this one works for me.

Draytek are professional quality routers, they would not bother placing with with Cnet. Putting the awful Linksys in 2nd place has the taint of product placement to me. I would rarely pay much attention to reviews, as they can so easily be subject to bias. Draytek would likely to be way over your budget. I would suggest that you go for the Netgear N600.

Thanks for the suggestion. Like what Rick have mentioned, our house hold uses
an average of two wireless devices. Once my daughter uses her Mac airbook, the laptop pretty much gets the bandwidth data. They are data monster and it makes our cell phones and iPads slower.

It's amazing how these things add up fast. When I got the N600 last year, it was just for a laptop, at that point I over-bought. Now we have a laptop, Ipad (another on the way) , 2 phones, PC, Netflix on 2 TVs and a Wii U, 9 devices in all. The N600 still handles it, but I can see the load will continue to grow.

Watch out when buying a N600 as I bought one and it still does not work, you need to send some back in for a firmware upgrade which you cant do at home. I have not bothered and will probably get a better one but our internet here sucks anyways so no real point.
