Adobe Creative Cloud

I have recently bought the Adobe PS & LR Creative cloud software.

I keep my Intel i7 Windows 7 pc running very lean & notice anything unusual.

The Creative Cloud application runs in the system tray, creating at least 5 Adobe tasks running in the background which use around 113mb of RAM. Since installing the CC software, I've noticed my pc "drag", especially on startup.

Would I be correct in assuming that the CC handles software updates & file sync to the cloud? if so, what are the issues with only running CC occasionally & not allowing it to run at startup?

Your assumption that CC handles updates, and the occasional communication with Adobe to make sure your account is paid-up, is correct. You'll get a warning if the app can't "phone home" for too long a time so if that happens let it connect and you should be fine.

That being said, I have a hard time imagining 113MB of memory usage is enough of a resource demand to be responsible for any kind of significant start-up delay. Are you seeing this delay on a benchmarking app, or does your start-up simply "feel" slower? I run a pretty lean Win7 install myself and if your benchmarks are showing an actual slowdown due to the CC tray app, I'd very much like to see those numbers, please.

Thanks for your reply.

I don't run benchmarks, it's just what I'm experiencing. Slower boot this morning too & it seems to run a tad slower. The some extra disk activity there too. I also noticed last night that a game I've played for years (Sins of a Solar Empire) will not run with CC running. Close CC & "Sins" will run.

Just a note on the "feel" I'm getting. It sounds a bit stupid reading it back.

I'm a computer technician & mainly work on installations & desktop support. I'm working on various client's computers many times a day & have done that for over 25 years. You can get a "feel" by doing that every day.

Can't say I have found CC to cause any lag (Win7 Corei5 16GB) but I do sometimes notice adverse effects when a new programme is installed or something is removed - generally running CCleaner gets a fix.

First off, no offense intended. I've spent more than few years building, installing and supporting networks myself and if the CC tray app is causing weirdness, I'd like to know the specifics. I was simply inquiring if you had benchmarks or were going off your gut. The latter is fine but it's harder for me to gauge accurately.

No problem HF, I didn't take offence, I just realised that I didn't quantify anything... & still haven't!

I do have a number of cloud connections running (Onedrive, iCloud, Cubby, Adobe CC) & have just removed one of them (Cubby). I may also remove iCloud as it often seems to fail. I have Adobe Photoshop Elements running on this pc & I know that although a boxed product, it still phones home. Perhaps it could be an issue. It's not a big problem, but there does seem to be a drag since installing it.

There are cache and memory usage settings in the Photoshop and Lightroom preferences that can grab and hold resources that your computer would otherwise use. History settings can also chew up a bunch of resources if you're not careful. I've got 16GB of RAM and I need to close out and restart Photoshop after a dozen edits or so as it seems to hold onto stuff even after I close out the images. I personally haven't done enough legwork to set mine up to be its most efficient, so I can't give you recommendations, but I'm sure if you hit an Adobe forum or google for optimized Photoshop memory usage settings you'll find something to help.

I've blamed the computer slow down on my new Western Digital 4td internal drive. I disconnected the drive as a test & everything is back to normal. I've applied for an RMA for the drive.

That's now the 2nd WD product in a row that has failed for me. :(

3rd times a charm? Or using the RMA to get a different model?

I've created the RMA with no replacement. This will give me time to decide what to do.

Meanwhile, I visited a client today with a failed WD Blue SATA drive in an HP desktop computer. HP have replaced the drive with a Hitachi.

I wondering at the moment if it's viable to save the LR catalogue direct to a NAS drive?

Are you looking to move your LR Library catalogue to the NAS? Or your pics? Or both. You should be able to do both or any combination. I keep my catalogue local, it's less than 40GB and that's with 38GB of backups in the folder. My pics total over 1TB. I keep that on a separate disk.

That's very interesting. I thought that the catalogue *was* the files. I'm not using LR yet & don't have any files in there. So they are different?

Thinking after sleeping on it to get a 2tb internal drive instead.
