Monitor calibration

I was wondering whether any members used monitor calibration. I was thinking about this after a poster recently said that he had adjusted the colour to suit the item that he was holding in his hand. If his monitor is calbrated incorrectly, then this would be displayed only to suit his monitor.

I have installed a couple calibrators for clients & was surprised how much better their monitor contrast & colour was displayed afterwards.

What do others think?

I have the spyder and it made a difference with my view sonic monitor. The biggest difference was my pics looked good on the monitor to me but after uploading they were way too bright. The colors looked better as well and now all devices are very close. I think it was worth it and will always have one.

I've been lusting after a ColorMunki ever since I graduated to a "real" monitor. From my reading (limited as it is) it seems a ColorMunki is better suited to my monitor than a Spyder but I've yet to make the purchase. If you do pick one up, I'd be curious as to your thoughts on it.

Thanks for your replies.

I would tend to get a ColorMunki as I have installed these before & know that they work well. They are also sold through my regular distributors, which helps with cost.

I will get one & feedback the results. :)

Dave... Help me understand why one would be better than the other?

From my reading of side-by-side reviews, the ColorMunki seems to be a better product. That said, I have no first hand experience with either product.

I have the spyder pro and read the first review. I have never had an issue with 4 year old Mac Pro and view sonic monitor, so can't to speak to the issues this person had, but the review seemed very one sided. There are some differences and I read about issues with both devices but went with spyder based recommendations from friends. I would compare the software options and go from there. The devices achieve the same thing so it just comes down to their software and expandable options like printer calibration and such.

Either one will serve you well if you feel like you have an issue, which I did and it fixed it.

i know a lot of people that don't use them at all.

I just got the Spyder Pro for my Mac Pro and both laptops (MBA and rMBP), but haven't used it on any of them yet. Will probably start with the laptops this week while traveling. No opinions from me yet, other than the reviews on the Spyder Pro seemed pretty consistent.

I find my IMac monitor to be spot on, taking it thru the entire calibration process I found the Apple default setting to be correct in every instance and what I see on my monitor is what I get out of my printer. So until that changes I will not be using any calibration devices. As my monitor ages that may change but it has not so far. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That seems to be very true from what I have experienced, my Mac book pro is perfect. I only use it on my Mac Pro and external monitor, which is not an Apple monitor, it's a fairly cheap view sonic to be replaced in the coming months. I hope.

I use Spyder on my 27" iMac... and honestly, the monitor has always been almost spot on... In fact, I haven't felt the need to upgrade the Spyder software because the monitor is so accurate...

Right, before I bought the calibrator I would alway double check on my Mac book pro because it was always spot on. But it was easier to just get the calibrator then move or share pictures back and forth because one computer was up stairs and the other was downstairs. So my plan is to get an apple monitor or something similar, and the similar is almost of equal cost. For the interim the calibrator was cheaper.
