List Your FREE Photography Software

Some people don't realize that there are a lot of decent FREE photo-software programs available for FREE downloads.

I thought it might be helpful if Nikonite Members would list known FREE software in a clearing house thread for others to evaluate and use.

I'll start with some that I have used. If anyone is interested, all they have to do is GOOGLE the title.

PERFECT EFFECTS (general post-processing)

VIEW NX2 (camera transfer program)

CAPTURE NX-D (for converting files)

PICASA (general post-processing)

HUGIN (panoramas)

SERIF (panoramas)

Are we limiting this to photography related software?

It would be really helpful if posters would clarify if the software is for MAC, Windows, or cross-platform.

My favorite photo-related bit of freeware is IRFanview (and the related plugins). For viewing photos and rudimentary adjustments, IRFanview rocks my world. If I had to wait for Photoshop to open every time I needed to do a quick and dirty crop, I'd long ago have blown my brains out. IRFanview has good RAW support but does not come in MAC OS flavor at this time, so it's PC users only.

I would just want to note that while Perfect Effects 8 is occasionally available as a free download, it is not always available as a free download, so if you see it, grab it. Perfect Effects 4 was also available in this manner.

How could I forget the venerable, but surprisingly powerful, Paint.net application? A real gem of a freebie but for Windows users only.

Another nifty app for Windows users is Photo Dater. Bet you couldn't figure out from the name this app puts a date-stamp on your digital photos after they're taken. Probably not something everyone needs every day, but when the day comes, this little app puts ordinance on target.

I loaded it the last time you posted that it was available. Thanks.

Some of these I hadnt heard of, so I will be checking into.

In the past I have used Microsoft ICE for stitching panos together, and I think it is available for windows and Mac

Raw Therapee is good for PP also. I believe it is available for most OS's, however it has a pretty good learning curve especially if you haven't done much real detailed Raw processing.
