Separating JPG and NEF files in Elements 11 Organizer

I've just started using Elements and have a question about segregating JPG and NEF files.

When I import from my SD Card, it imports both NEF and JPG. So "My Folders" now displays two thumbnails, JPG and NEF versions. That's all fine and good because these files are on the drive.

When I create the album, I only want one version of each picture to be displayed and stored. What is the best way to handle this in the organizer? Optimally I'd like to have one Album for JPG and one for NEF, but I can't figure out how I can selectively add them.

Any advice on how to handle this is greatly appreciated!

I've been using Lightroom in my workflow for a long time, so I'm a little rusty here...

But I think that Elements is generating that JPEG from the NEF file, it's not importing two separate images. You can't selectively add them because they're tied together. I could be wrong though.

There might be an import preference that could separate them right after import and put them in respective folders. But I'm not 100% sure about this. Check the import options.

Not familiar with Elements since I use PSP X4 and Lightroom and the .NEF file would show as a blank icon with only the file number to distinguish it between all the other similar files. What I had to do is open Windows Explorer -- find the folder with both files and then sort them by name --- create new folder and drag the sorted by name .NEF files to new folder....Bingo! JPEG's in one folder and the .NEF's in another.

I know there has to be any easier way to do this, but this was the only fix that I could come up with.

Guess I'm not understanding your issue then.

If you're importing both RAW and JPEG files but just want to store them in different locations, there's an option in general settings somewhere called "Treat JPEG files next to RAW files separately" or similar. That won't separate the files currently stored, but it will work on future imports.

I think to do that, you'll have to go into the folders where your images are stored and right click in open space. Should be a "Synchronize" option which will separate the JPEGS from the RAWS and then you can move them.

I know you can filter by media type, and perhaps under preferences there is a way to specify the display of only certain file types? The other option is to import into the main catalog and then create two separate catalogs, one for JPG's and one for RAW and then copy the appropriate files into there? A bit of a pain to do the extra steps, but it'll keep things clean.
