i own i Nikon D3000 and im looking to to buying some new accessories i have the standard 18-55mm lens i also have a 55-200mm lens, im looking into purchashing a new lens but im not sure what to go for everyone is saying the 50mm - f/1.8, what type of shots would this lens enable me to take eg. close ups or landscapes for example. my other option is a lens that has a good zoom option as i really want to get better at taking picutes of the moon for example.

i am also looking into a external flash, im looking to spend mega money but i have no idea and i am wondering if anyone can help me out, thanks

Hi Taylor
I think you ment to say that you do not want to spend mega money. So I will go with that assumption and say that the 50mm 1.4, 1.8, 2.8 is a must have lens in my opinion. They are very afordable fast lens at any of the 3 f-ranges listed. It is a great all around use lens, you won't find many Photographer's that do not have one in the bag. To get a zoom that is faster (assuming yours is kit lens f/3.5-5.6) or longer zoom would be pretty pricy purchase. And not really knowing your budget a lens like this may give you sticker shock. You have pretty good coverage with the 2 lens you have you need to figure what type of Photo's you want to take most, and work on getting lens to meet those needs otherwise you will end up with a bag of equiptment and an empty wallet. Take time to learn what these lens will do for you and you might already have all you need.

Hi Taylor
Glad youu found some sense in all my rambling LOL. You will definitly need a good shoe mount flash, a good brand at a decent price is the promaster line. The promaster 7500 DX gives you virtually the same features of the Nikon SB-800 at about 1/2 the price about $230.00. I use this flash for my D-90 and have been very happy with it worth looking into. You still have full TTL, Auto, Manual, Model,, Slave.

You might want to consider the Nikon SB-400. I also have the larger SB-800 but usually carry the smaller SB-400 for casual family and travel images. This is very reasonably priced at around US$115.

It is a very good flash with some limitations: without an additional cable you can only use it on camera, it won't cover wide angle, etc.

The SB-600 is certainly a more capable flash and has additional features. One major feature of the SB-600, SB-800 and SB-900 is "commander mode" which allows you to trigger the flash remotely or off camera. Your camera body has to support the feature or you need to use a SU-800 Wireless Commander. The D3000 does not have this feature built in so you would require the SU-800. I'd suggest thinking about how you would use the flash and the images where you might use it before deciding. Hope this helps!

everyone is saying the 50mm - f/1.8

The 50mm f/1.8 will not autofocus on your D3000. The D3000 requires AF-S lenses for autofocus, and the 50mm f/1.8 is a screw-drive lens. The AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G will work on your D3000 and it will give you approximately the same angle of view as a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera would. This lens is great for low-light photography where flash is not allowed or not wanted.

As for a flash, the SB-600 is a good one; smaller, lighter and less expensive than the SB-900, but more powerful and capable than the SB-400.
