Hello!
I have already posted a thread on another forum here, but figured I should introduce myself.

I am an RN, have been doing Labor & Delivery for 16 years now. Currently working in Louisiana, but my family and horses are still in SE Ga and I'm hoping to get a job soon to get back home.

I have two grown (well, if you wanna call them that!) kids 19 & 22, 9 dogs, 2 cats and 15 horses. We raise quarter horses for barrel racing, and also my daughter, mother and I all barrel race. Obviously, horses and barrel racing are my passion! BUT, I have always wanted to get into photography, but only have experience with P&S type compacts. Finally managed to buy a D90 after wanting a camera like this for over 10 yrs and am very excited about learning how to use it.

I have no disillusionment about ever going pro, but would be awesome to make some money on the side, however, my true goal is to take excellent pictures. I particularly like taking macro shots, and of course horse pix, including barrel racing.

I've already learned a TON of info on this site, and am impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the members here and I look forward to learning more as I progress in my skills.

Thanks!!

Welcome to the site! My sister-in-law is a labor & delivery RN so I kinda I know how busy (and tiring) that is. I have to say I admire the effort it takes to make time for your other hobbies.

Macro photography, done well, is a special niche. You'll also need special lenses. I learned a ton from Don Gale at a Tamron sponsored workshop a couple years ago. If you have the opportunity to attend one, they also lend you lenses for the workshop. (Don't get me started on their 90mm. . . . :p) Here is a link: Events, Photo Division, Tamron USA, Inc.

Thanks for the info! Yes, we are always busy!!! I am really hoping to transfer into Day Surgery once I've been at the hospital (that I am interviewing for) and then I'll get to finally work DAYS. YAYAYAYA!! I've been working nights for 16 years and I hate the way it makes me feel all the time. Makes a person feel like crap all the time.

I'd have to say the macrphotography really interests me the most. I'd LOVE to be able to try the lenses before I purchase them. I'll have to take a look and see if there's anything close to me. I have SOO much to learn. Heck, I'm still going through the first part of the manual and the thought of having to control the ISO, aperature, and shutter speed manually is a tad bit overwhelming right now lol. I will need to be able to shoot my mom and daughter barrel racing, but truly am drawn to the close ups of the little things for some reason.

No, I sure hadn't. I didn't realize they had those. Thanks! Seems like most of the workshops of any kind are too far away. I am SW La for the moment, but expect to be back in SE Ga very shortly.

Hello Super Newby. You and I have already exchanged several posts on this hobby. Oh, your not really overwhelmed are you? Nah, maybe just a little bit intimidated? Take it one small step at a time and before you know it you will be the expert and showing everyone else how to do it. You just have to remember it's fun learning and a challenge to take the next step. Learning to control ISO, aperture, and shutter speed is easy. Nikon has made it one of the easiest functions on the camera to learn and use. No kidding. This is not the forum or thread to go into how its done so I think I will start a new thread in the D90 forum with a basic explanation. I also would not say you'll never go pro. Your profession and photography mixes very well. Many years ago (don't ask) I had a friend of mine transfer into my national guard army photo unit. Never used any thing but a Kodak box camera before in his life. His day job was at a hospital as an orderly. To make a long story short he learned to use the army photo equipment, started taking pictures for the doctors and nurses, then started shooting for the hospital, got so busy they hired someone else to help him and wound up the head of a staff of photographers and photo lab personnel with all the modern day equipment he needed. Have fun using your D90.

Welcome to the site. I worked, and lived on a Quarter Horse Stud in Central Queensland, Australia for a few years. We also have a few Paint Horses, Tobianas.

We only had 2 Cattle dogs though LOL. Enjoy your photography and make it work for you. Have fun! :)

Joseph, that would be a dream come true for me! Haven't taken lots of pics of people as it hasn't seemed to be my strength, but of course, I really haven't practiced much either. You've been quite helpful, as well as have other members here and I think I have gotten more info and resources from this site than any other. I have been reading through the manual some (reading fatigues my eyes so not a lot at one time) and am amazed at how much there is to learn about photography!! I plan on taking it one step at a time until I get it figured out.

I would love for my story to end like your friend's story!

And thanks Snap Happy! Folks are quite friendly here! BTW, I DROOL over the thought of going to Australia and scuba diving and seeing all the wildlife.
