lens for D5000

It depends on what you want to take pictures of. There is no 'best lens' really, but anything Nikkor and AF-S will work on the D5000.

I always use my 35mm f1.8 Its a a fixed lense oviously, but just take a step forward or a step back and shoot away! Super tough, Super fast lense, Crisp shots everytime...... You cant go better for $300.

I agree, if I could have only one lens the 35mm 1.8 would be it. I think the next best (and least expensive) would be the 18-55 VR for general needs. From there the sky's the limit!

The "best" lens is going to be specific to each person. I like all my lenses but if I had to get rid of all of them and keep only one, the 18-105 would be the keeper. Just covers it all and is not too heavy. Takes great pictures just is not perfect for low light. Fortunately I don't have to give up my other lenses:)
