Got my first Nikon D40X. As a new user I was interested in the settings. Well, I think I may have messed up even the auto mode. Problem is that I have the camera on Auto, and have attached at this time the 18 - 55 lens. When I first took pics, they were clear. Since tampering with settings, I can't seem to get my pics in focus. In addition, when I press the shutter button, it seems to have a delay now. So, what have I done to my new Jewel? Can anyone tell me what settings to have my camera on in the Auto mode? I would appreciate your guidance.

I would first do a "reset" on your camera which will take you back to the factory settings...if you don't want to do that then check to see what metering you have it set on...spot, area etc...Also make sure the manual/auto button is selected on your lens. Also try a few outdoor shots when it is sunny and see if teh problem exists still...if not then consider that your other pictures that didn't turn out may of been because of low lighting...

Thank you and I have done a reset. But, now when I take a picture, all of the info about the settings attached to the photo is coming up. I must have hit something else also in reviewing a picture.

Can you advise me of a good website or book that will explain usage of the camera in easy understandable explanations.

I am just so excited to have this camera, I just jumped right in and started making changes before I knew much about it. I think I have learned a good lesson.

Thanks

When you review the pictures move the big toggle button on teh back of the camera left to right this should toggle between the full size picture preview and a smaller picture with data about the picture...same button up and down should move from picture to picture...
I don't know of a focused website just for the D40X.

Hi Great American I moved your post to the D40/D50/D60 forum. Good luck with the camera.

I know there is a D lighting under Retouch menu on the D40X, but is there also a setting for Active D lighting function? I was told to turn this function off, cut I can't find it. This came from a friend who has the D60, so I think this function is on his camera and not mine, as I can't locate under any of the menu choices.

Thanks again to all who are helping me.
