Shutter speed limit to 200 when using flash!!!

On my D80, when I am using the flash, whether internal or external, I cannot use shutter speed faster than 200, in manual or shutter priority mode. Without the flash on, I am able to go faster than 200 shutter speed. I tried turning off 'Auto FP' mode under custom settings. Why is this. Am I doing something wrong? Please advise.
Thank you.

Perhaps it is your flash. I do not believe that the higher flash sync will work with your on-camera flash; but it should allow faster shutter speeds with an SB-600, SB-800 or SB-900 (maybe even the earlier Nikon i-TTL flashes, though I do not own those). By the way, here is a link to an excellent blog that explains the high-speed flash sync with the focal plane (fp) shutter, and how those work. I hope this helps.

This is just the camera's default flash sync speed. The D90 is also 1/200, and you can't adjust it. Under most circumstances, this shouldn't be a problem since flash freezes action anyway. There are workarounds, even high speed sync options offered in the camera itself through the custom menus. Using non-TTL flash units (in my opinion) are easier since you basically set everything up manually.

Anthony,
Thank you. As a workarounds I adjust the aperture and ISO value, even though that's not what I really want to work with. Also, I have high speed sync (auto FP) turned ON. I use my external flash in manual mode. Anyway, will try to figure out :)
Thank you.

I have a D90 and I could turn on the "Auto FP" function and could set my shutter higher than 1/200

I am having the same problem with my d-90 it is not the flash because i know someone with the same exact flash and camera and hers isnt restricting her shutter speed with her flash attached.
